Couldn't think of a nicer title for this one. Since my "Houston, we have a problem" title was such a hit I think I was under too much pressure this time around!
Yes, I didn't translate the first Houston post because it didn't have much new information on it although I managed to write a long post nonetheless - as usual!
Mainly I said how awesome it was than D. got a job in Houston and that his new boss is super nice and attentive and how well Rebecca and his 2 years old daughter got along with each other when we had dinner at their house! Also, I talked about how difficult it had been to find a good (say: safe, new, pretty and "affordable") place to live in Houston. And that we were still homeless and going to Houston one more time trying to succed this time!
Well, and we did it!!! Thanks to GOD, honestly!!!! One from outside couldn't believe the miracle we have witnessed to have found what we found! It was in our budget, it's located in a beautiful and safe neighborhood, the house looks perfect from the outside and from the inside and it's relatively new (built in the 90s). Oh, and doesn't have carpet, which I think it's a plus right now! It has a great and well taken care front yard and wood fenced backyard with tree shade!!
The houston rental market is super busy right now so one house doesn't stay in the market for too long! But this one was just waiting for us since the landlord required great credit (which we have mainly thanks to free college in Brazil and always being debt free, fortunately!), no pets (even fish!!), no smoking and good general application! With all these requirements I was kinda impressed he didn't bother we have a toddler!!
The only thing that is not so great it's the commute! It's very far from downtown Houston but a lot of poeple commute from both places and we just found out that there are buses - actually - and some carpooling people try to organize. We are still figuring this out but we are not that worried about it!
Besides all these, the general rental price in Houston is incredibly high and the houses are old (from the 60s with 60s appliances and bathrooms!!!) and generally in need of some serious maintenance and no place in Houston is actually safe, crime free. And it's hard to find a good public school district. That's why so many people live in cities nearby and endure the heavy traffic everyday. We had to learn this the hard way since we spent our first trip to Houston visiting ghettos and half of our second trip visiting the 60's homes museum.
Now a new adventure begins for us! We never rented a house in the US and there is so much to learn about it! I don't even know the basics of it, like how and what days to take the garbage out, where do I receive my mail, how to use the gas and the fireplace and how to clean a non carpet floor (with the american products and equipment, I mean!) how to deal with a front and backyard and garage! What grill to buy, etc! And finally my last concern about the house is how am I suppose to furniture such a big living room! And there are still more things to worry about, believe me!
We'll be moving in the last week of september which means I have two weeks to pack and clean everything since we'll be going to NY between 9/9 and 9/16.
But I guess I just have to approach it as an adventure it is! And be thankful for what we have! And we certainly are!
xx
